  5. Windows(r) NT and using its 'Setup' utility, as well as 
  6. troubleshooting recommendations.

  25. 1.  INTRODUCTION AND TERMINOLOGY
  26.  
  27. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is  not  a  stand-
  28. alone  program; there is no special executable file you would run to
  29. start FM StepUp.  To use  the  program, you need to properly install
  30. and set it up and, every time you  run File Manager, FM StepUp  will
  31. run automatically.
  32.  
  33. FM  StepUp  *CANNOT*  be installed 'locally', to be used by a single
  34. user; this is  because  File  Manager  itself  is a 'shared' Windows
  35. application, and if an add-on to File Manager is  installed,  it  is
  36. shared  by  all  users  of  the  system.   However,  every  user may
  37. 'deactivate' FM StepUp if s/he  does  not  want to use it, after the
  38. software is installed by the System Administrator.  Other users will
  39. be able to continue using FM StepUp.
  40.  
  41. To make the software available for use, the following steps must  be
  42. performed:
  43.  
  44. 1. Copying  all files from the FM StepUp package into a directory,
  45.    which  must  be  at  least   'readable'  by  all  users.   It  is
  46.    recommended to use a  separate  subdirectory  of  the  'win32app'
  47.    directory for this purpose.  This step should be performed by the
  48.    system  administrator,  or  another  user, who has an appropriate
  49.    privilege level.  The Setup utility  may  be used to perform this
  50.    step.
  51.  
  52. 2. Registering FM StepUp in the System Registry  as  an  add-on  to
  53.    File  Manager  ('enabling'  FM StepUp).  This step also should be
  54.    performed by the administrator,  since  regular users are usually
  55.    not allowed to modify the shared part  of  Registry.   The  Setup
  56.    utility may be used to perform this procedure.
  57.  
  58.    After  this  step  is  complete,  FM  StepUp  is  loaded and used
  59.    automatically whenever a user  runs  File Manager.  Each user, is
  60.    able, however, to deactivate FM StepUp and then activate it again
  61.    any number of times, depending on his or her own preferences.
  62.  
  63. 3. Purchasing a license for continued use of FM StepUp and, 
  64.    after paying the license fee and obtaining a registration  code, entering the
  65.    registration information into the Registry.  If a site license is
  66.    purchased, this step must be  performed by the administrator.  If
  67.    an individual use license is obtained, this step is performed  by
  68.    the user (all other users in the same location will still be able
  69.    to  continue  evaluation  of  the  program  and  then register it
  70.    independently on each other).  The  Setup  utility may be used to
  71.    perform this step.
  72.  
  73.    If a user decides that s/he does not want to use  this  program,
  74.    s/he  must deactivate it (using the Setup utility), and FM StepUp
  75.    will not be loaded for  this  user.   Other users will be able to
  76.    continue using FM StepUp.
  77.  
  78. The rest of this document  provides  more  detailed  information  on
  79. performing  the  installation and registration procedures using
  80. the Setup utility, included in the FM StepUp package.  The following
  81. terms are used throughout this text:
  82.  
  83. 'currently installed version' -
  84.  
  85.    the version of FM  StepUp  which  is  currently available for use
  86.    when you start the  Setup  utility.   There  may  be  no  such  a
  87.    version,  if  no previous version of FM StepUp has been installed
  88.    in the system before.
  89.  
  90. 'version being set up' -
  91.  
  92.    the set of FM StepUp files  from which the Setup utility is being
  93.    run.  All the files included in FM StepUp package must be kept in
  94.    the same directory, and the Setup utility considers  the  set  of
  95.    files  in the directory from which it is launched as the 'master'
  96.    set of files.  If you  have  a  number of different sets of files
  97.    (for  instance,  different  versions  of  FM  StepUp  located  in
  98.    separate directories), you can set up each of them by running the
  99.    Setup utility from the corresponding directory.
  100.  
  101. 'enabling(disabling) FM StepUp' -
  102.  
  103.    making FM StepUp available for use by  a  certain  group  of  the
  104.    users.   This procedure is performed by the system administrator,
  105.    or some other user with  the privilege level sufficient to modify
  106.    the shared part of the Registry.
  107.  
  108. 'activating(deactivating) FM StepUp' -
  109.  
  110.    instructing File Manager to load (or not to load) FM  StepUp  for
  111.    an  individual  user.   This  procedure  is performed by the user
  112.    himself  by  running  Setup.exe. It  does  not  influence  the
  113.    availability of FM StepUp to other users.
  114.  
  115. 'registering' -
  116.  
  117.    depending on the context, may mean one of the following:
  118.  
  119.    - purchasing  a  license for  continued  use of FM StepUp
  120.      and obtaining a registration code.  Please
  121.      see file REGISTER.TXT for more information and order forms;
  122.  
  123.    - entering the registration  code  using  Setup utility, and thus
  124.      converting an evaluation copy of FM StepUp  into  a  registered
  125.      version;
  126.  
  127.    - registering  FM  StepUp  as  an  add-on to File Manager in the
  128.      System Registry.  This is done automatically when you use Setup
  129.      utility to install FM StepUp.
  130.  
  131. 'power user' -
  132.  
  133.      any user with the  privilege  level  sufficient to modify the
  134.      shared part  of  the  Registry  (such  as  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE).
  135.      There  may  be  a  number  of  different  user groups with such
  136.      privileges;  for   the   purposes   of   this   text  they  are
  137.      indistinguishable between each other.
  138.  
  139. 'regular user' -
  140.  
  141.      any user who is not a 'power' one (see above).
  142.  
  143. FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible Setup  utility.   You
  144. may  run  it using the 'File-Run' command of Program Manager or File
  145. Manager, or double-clicking  its  icon.   If  you  have  a number of
  146. different versions of FM StepUp, BE SURE to run Setup.exe  from  the
  147. directory containing the version you want to set up!  You cannot set
  148. up  a new version of FM StepUp by running Setup.exe from the old set
  149. of files, if there is one.
  150.  
  151. After you run Setup.exe and click  on the 'OK' button in response to
  152. the 'Welcome' screen,  the  main  screen  is  displayed,  containing
  153. information about the version of the software you are setting up and
  154. directory in which it's located, the currently installed version, if
  155. any, and the following buttons:
  156.  
  157.   Administrative Setup
  158.  
  159.   Individual User Setup
  160.  
  161.   Exit
  162.  
  163. The  rest  of  this  document provides detailed information on using
  164. these options.
  165.  
  166.  
  167. 2. ADMINISTRATIVE SETUP 
  168. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  169.  
  170. Before anyone can start using FM StepUp, it must be installed by the
  171. system administrator,  or  another  user,  whose  privilege level is
  172. sufficient to modify the shared part of the Registry.  If  Setup.exe
  173. is   run   by   a   user   without  the  necessary  privileges,  the
  174. 'Administrative Setup' button is grayed out and is not accessible.
  175.  
  176. After you press the 'Administrative Setup' button, a new screen pops
  177. up, providing a number  of  choices  to perform various installation
  178. procedures:
  179.  
  180.   Install -
  181.  
  182.      choose this button to quickly install FM StepUp in its  default
  183.      configuration.   You  may  wish to use this facility if you are
  184.      running Setup for the first time,  from a diskette or a CD-ROM.
  185.      You will be prompted for a new directory  to  place  the  files
  186.      into,  and  the  files  will be copied in the chosen directory.
  187.      You will be  also  prompted  to  create  a  Program Group for a
  188.      number of FM StepUp files, such as Setup.exe,  Readme.txt,  and
  189.      some  others.   Finally,  FM  StepUp  will be registered in the
  190.      Registry as an  add-on  to  File  Manager.   After this step is
  191.      completed, FM StepUp is ready to  use  by  all  users  of  your
  192.      system.
  193.  
  194.      Do  not use the 'Install' option if you have already placed all
  195.      FM StepUp  files  in  the  destination directory.  Instead,
  196.      choose the 'Enable' button to enable FM StepUp (see below).
  197.  
  198.      NOTE: FM StepUp uses CTL3D32.DLL file  to  produce  3D  effects
  199.      when  displaying dialog boxes.  
  200.      If you do  not
  201.      have  this  file  installed  in  your  system,  you  may do it
  202.      manually, either  before  or  after  installing  FM StepUp.  To
  203.      install  CTL3D32.DLL,  copy   it   into   your   WINNT/SYSTEM32
  204.      directory.  Yes, it's *that* easy!
  205.  
  206.   Enable -
  207.  
  208.      use  this button to change the availability of FM StepUp to the
  209.      users of your  system.   You  may  make the changes immediately
  210.      after you have installed FM StepUp, or you may exit  Setup  and
  211.      run it again later on to change the settings.
  212.  
  213.      After  you  choose  'Enable',  a  dialog  box  with a number of
  214.      options is presented.  It is important  to keep in mind that if
  215.      you are running Setup  from  a  directory  different  from  the
  216.      directory in which the currently installed version of FM StepUp
  217.      is  located,  then  pressing  'OK' in this dialog box will make
  218.      version 'being setup'  the  'currently  installed' one.  If you
  219.      want to change one of the settings in this dialog box, be  sure
  220.      to  run  Setup from the directory where the currently installed
  221.      version is located.
  222.  
  223.      By default, Setup makes FM  StepUp  available to all users.  If
  224.      you leave it that way, each user will be able to deactivate  FM
  225.      StepUp,  if  s/he does not want to use it, by running Setup.exe
  226.      and performing the 'Individual  User  Setup' (see below in this
  227.      file).
  228.  
  229.      The second choice also allows you to make FM  StepUp  available
  230.      to  all  users.   The  difference  is  that  FM  StepUp will be
  231.      initially activated and ready  for  use  only to 'power' users,
  232.      whereas 'regular' users will need  to  explicitly  activate  FM
  233.      StepUp by running Setup.
  234.  
  235.      The  third  choice  differs  from  the  previous two in that FM
  236.      StepUp will  be  initially  deactivated  for  all  users of the
  237.      system (including Administrator!).  Each user wishing to  start
  238.      using FM StepUp, will have to run Setup and explicitely activate
  239.      the software.  All users, both 'power' and 'regular' ones, will
  240.      be able to activate FM StepUp.
  241.  
  242.      The  fourth  option  in  this group makes FM StepUp enabled and
  243.      activated for 'power' users  only. None of the 'regular' user will be
  244.      able to activate FM StepUp  for  his  or  her  own  use.   This
  245.      option,  for  instance,  allows your organization to purchase a
  246.      site license for use FM StepUp only by 'power' users.
  247.  
  248.      Finally, the fifth option  disables  FM  StepUp by removing the
  249.      relevant information from the Registry.  Use this option if you
  250.      wish to temporarily prevent all users from using FM StepUp,  or
  251.      if  you  have  decided  to completely remove FM StepUp from the
  252.      system.
  253.  
  254.   Register -
  255.  
  256.      use this button after you have purchased a site license for use
  257.      FM StepUp  in  your  organization,  to  enter  the registration
  258.      information from your Registration Acknowledgment.   After  you
  259.      have completed this step, the name of your organization and the
  260.      number  of  users  it is registered to will be displayed in the
  261.      'About FM StepUp'  screen,  instead  of the words 'Unregistered
  262.      copy'.  Please refer to REGISTER.TXT for  more  information  on
  263.      purchasing a license for continued use of the software.
  264.  
  265.      NOTE:  if  you  have  purchased  a  license for individual use,
  266.      rather than a site  license,  the registration information from
  267.      your   Registration   Acknowledgment   (your   name   and   the
  268.      registration code) must be entered in the Individual User Setup
  269.      mode (see below in this file).

  273.      this button returns you to the main screen.

  276. 3. INDIVIDUAL USER SETUP
  277. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  278.  
  279. The Individual User Setup button on the main screen opens  a  dialog
  280. box  with  a  number of choices related to the user who is currently
  281. logged on.  Note  that  if  the  Administrative  Setup  has not been
  282. previously  done,  or  FM  StepUp  has  not  been  enabled  by   the
  283. administrator,  the  Individual User Setup button will be grayed out
  284. and unavailable.
  285.  
  286. The first time the user  chooses the 'Individual User Setup' button,
  287. s/he is asked to enter his or her first name.  After that  a  dialog
  288. box with the following choices is displayed:
  289.  
  290.   Activate/Deactivate -
  291.  
  292.     choose  this  button  to  change the state of FM StepUp for the
  293.     current user.  If  you  deactivate  FM  StepUp,  it  will not be
  294.     loaded by File Manager when you run it; all the other users will
  295.     still be able to use FM StepUp as long as it is enabled (by  the
  296.     administrator,  see  the 'Administrative Setup' section above in
  297.     this file).  Every user  may  activate  and deactivate FM StepUp
  298.     for his/her own use any time and any number of times.
  299.  
  300.   Register/Unregister -
  301.  
  302.     use this button after you  have  purchased  an  individual  use
  303.     license,  to enter the registration information
  304.     from  your   Registration   Acknowledgment.    After  you  have
  305.     completed this step, your name will be displayed in the  'About
  306.     FM  StepUp'  screen,  instead of the words 'Unregistered copy'.
  307.     Please refer to ORDER.TXT for more information on purchasing
  308.     a license for continued use of the program.  Every user of the 
  309.     system may register FM StepUp for  individual  use  independently  
  310.     on all the other users.
  311.  
  312.      NOTE:  if  you  have  purchased  a  site   license   for   your
  313.      organization,  the  corresponding registration information must
  314.      be entered in the Administrative  Setup mode (see above in this
  315.      file).

  319.      this button returns you to the main screen.

  322. 4. UNINSTALLING FM STEPUP
  323. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  324.  
  325.   If you do not wish to use FM StepUp,  you  may  deactivate  it  by
  326.   running  Setup  and choosing 'Individual User Setup - Deactivate'.
  327.   This will prevent File Manager  from loading FM StepUp during your
  328.   sessions, while allowing other users to continue using it.  If you
  329.   decide later on to start using FM StepUp again, you  may  activate
  330.   it  in the same way: run Setup and choose 'Individual User Setup -
  331.   Activate'.
  332.  
  333.   To completely uninstall FM StepUp  and  remove it from the system,
  334.   please run Setup and enter the 'Administrative  Setup'  mode  (you
  335.   must have an appropriate privilege level to do this).  Then choose
  336.   'Enable'  and, when the dialog box pops up, select the last option
  337.   - 'Disable for all  users'.   Finally, after exiting Setup, delete
  338.   all  files  from  the  directory  in  which  you  have  previously
  339.   installed FM StepUp.
  340.   
  341. 5. TROUBLESHOOTING
  342. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  343.  
  344. The following  information  is  provided  to  help  if you encounter
  345. problems when using FM StepUp for Windows NT.
  346.  
  347. 5.1. File Manager suddenly fails to run
  348. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  349.  
  350.     If you are using the New Shell (Windows 95-ish) with WIndows NT
  351.     3.51, make sure you are running the latest version of the shell,
  352.     which can be downloaded from ftp.microsoft.com.  FM StepUp is
  353.     known to fail with the first alfa-release of the shell, but runs
  354.     well with the second one.
  355.     
  356.     If the above is not the case, disable FM StepUp by removing
  357.     information about it from the Registry in one of the following
  358.     ways:
  359.     
  360.     -  run  Setup  from  FM  StepUp  directory   and,   using   the
  361.        'Administrative  Setup'  mode,  choose  'Enable', and then -
  362.        'Disable for all users'.  Or, you can perform this operation
  363.        manually:
  364.         
  365.     -  run Regedt32.exe (located  in your WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory)
  366.        and find the following key:
  367.         
  368.           HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/
  369.                 Current Version/IniFileMapping/winfile.ini
  370.             
  371.        Find the value 'AddOns' under this key, it points to the key
  372.        in the Registry which contains information about  addons  to
  373.        File Manager.  By default, this location is specified as
  374.  
  375.           SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\File Manager\AddOns
  376.         
  377.        where  SYS:  stands  for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/.  Find
  378.        this key; the values  it  contains  describe add-ons to File
  379.        Manager, which are currently enabled in the system.
  380.         
  381.        FM StepUp is specified by the string variable  'FM  StepUp',
  382.        which points to the location of file FMSUNT.DLL.  To disable
  383.        FM StepUp, delete this value from the Registry.
  384.  
  385.        If,  after  you  have disabled FM StepUp with one of the methods
  386.        described above, File Manager still fails to run, the problem is
  387.        *not* related to FM  StepUp.   Please  refer  to your Windows NT
  388.        documentation for troubleshooting information.
  389.     
  390.        If, however, the problem goes away after you  have  disabled  FM
  391.        StepUp, it indicates that one of the following files, FMSUNT.DLL
  392.        or CSLIBNT.DLL, has been corrupted by some reason.
  393.     
  394.        Solution:
  395.        ~~~~~~~~~
  396.        Delete  all files from the directory in which you have installed
  397.        FM StepUp and repeat the  installation  using the 'fresh' set of
  398.        files (from the installation disk).
  399.     
  400.        Also, make sure that file  CTL3D32.DLL  in  your  WINNT\SYSTEM32
  401.        directory is not corrupted.
  402.     
  403. 5.2. File Manager still does not work properly
  404. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  405.  
  406.     If you have installed a newer version of FM StepUp in the system
  407.     where a previous version was used, make sure that the 'old'  and
  408.     'new'  files are not mixed: all files in the directory where you
  409.     have installed FM StepUp should have the same date/time stamp.
  410.  
  411.     Another  possible  reason is the corruption of the user-specific
  412.     configuration  data,  which  is  stored  by  FM  StepUp  in  the
  413.     Registry.
  414.     
  415.     Solution:
  416.     ~~~~~~~~
  417.     run Regedt32.exe (located in  your WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory) and
  418.     find the following key:
  419.         
  420.         HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Chaosoft/FMSTEPUP.INI/
  421.         
  422.     delete the FMSTEPUP.INI subkey (all its subkeys will be  deleted
  423.     as  well).   All  settings  of  FM  StepUp will be automatically
  424.     restored to their defaults next time you run File Manager.
  425.  
  426.     
  427. 5.3. Undefined function ... in module CTL3D32.DLL
  428. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  429.  
  430.     This message indicates that an  older version of CTL3D32.DLL
  431.     is currently installed in your WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.
  432.     
  433.     Solution: 
  434.     ~~~~~~~~~
  435.     install a newer version of this file (copy this file from the FM
  436.     StepUp set of files into your  SYSTEM32  directory)  and  reboot
  437.     system.
  438.     
  439. 5.4. This application uses CTL3D32.DLL which is not properly installed
  440. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  441.  
  442.     This  message  indicates that there is another copy of this file
  443.     somewhere on your disk,  which  is  loaded prior to the 'master'
  444.     copy installed into the SYSTEM32 directory.
  445.     
  446.     Solution:
  447.     ~~~~~~~~~
  448.     Perform a global search for the file  CTL3D32.DLL  on  all  your
  449.     disks  (you  may  wish  to use the 'File-Search' command of File
  450.     Manager for this  purpose)  and  eliminate  all the files found,
  451.     except the one in the SYSTEM32 directory.
  452.     
  453.  
  454. 5.5. If the problem persists...
  455. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  456.  
  457. Make sure you are running the latest version of FM StepUp.  Please
  458. visit our FTP site at pik.com/pub/ChaoSoft or our Web site at 
  459. http://pik.com/chaosoft.html to download the latest versions of
  460. our products.
  461.  
  462. If this does not solve the problem, please contact us via e-mail at

  464. provide the following information:

  466. 1.  Version and build number of Windows NT you are using; version of
  467.     the New Shell you are running (if any)
  468.  
  469. 2.  Version number of FM StepUp
  470.  
  471. 3.  Detailed description of the problem; a reproducable sequence  of
  472.     actions leading to the problem would be of most help;
  473.  
  474. 4.  If  an error message is displayed by the system, the exact text
  475.     of the message.
